Before you write your song, check out these cool tips from NEA about going green.

Air-conditioners consume the bulk of a household's electricity bill. A fan uses less than 1/10th the electricity of an air-conditioner! This means you save up to $840 a year*.

If you use an air conditioner, set the temperature at about 25˚C. You could save up to $25 a year* for every degree you raise.

Standby power can account for up to 10% of your home electricity use. Don't leave electrical appliances on standby. Switch them off when not in use and you can save up to $70 a year*.

A compact fluorescent lamp uses only 13W of energy; in contrast, an incandescent bulb uses a whopping 60W. By choosing energy efficient light bulbs, you can save up to $30 a bulb per year*.

Choose an energy-efficient appliance (e.g. air-conditioner, refrigerator) by checking the energy labels. A 4-tick air-conditioner saves you about $450 in electricity bills a year compared to a 1-tick model. A 4-tick refrigerator saves you about $70 a year compared to a 2-tick model*.

Littering can create an unpleasant and unsanitary environment. When discarded carelessly, litter such as used tissue paper and drink cans or bottles can lead to the breeding of mosquitoes, fleas, rodents, cockroaches and flies. Be considerate, bin your litter.

Do you really need a plastic bag when buying that bottle of mineral water? Minimise the use of plastic bags when making small purchases. For your grocery shopping, bring along a reusable shopping bag.

Reuse items wherever you can and recycle waste such as aluminium drink cans, plastic bottles, paper and product packaging. The 3Rs habit not only helps to conserve resources by minimising waste, it also save energy, hence reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Choose plants that are hardy and require less maintenance. Cut down on chemical fertilizers and go organic. Let's make Singapore our green garden!

Choose energy efficient appliances and products with minimal or recyclable packaging. Support or eco-friendly companies or businesses. Make 'green' choices a part of your everyday lifestyle.

transport

Lower your carbon footprint and reduce carbon emissions by taking public transport such as buses or trains. Alternatively, choose to drive green vehicles such as electric or hybrid cars and motorbikes.

toilet

Practice good toilet habits such as drying your hands with a hand-dryer or paper towel. Avoid splashing water on the toilet floor. Throw used towels into the litterbins provided.

spitting

Spitting in public places is an unhygienic practice that spreads germs. If you need to do so, spit into a tissue paper or plastic carrier and then properly dispose of the waste into a bin.
