At Commonwealth Secondary School, sustainability is at the core of their decisions. Students learn in an environment which is a microcosm of Singapore's natural habitat. Examples include a wetland, freshwater stream and rainforest. Their Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) & Elective provides students a holistic approach on sustainability issues concerning Singapore and the world through real-world applications with the help of industry partners.

Their latest project involves germinating seeds of native endangered forest species in the school's plant nursery, which not only contributes to NPark's One Million Trees movement but will also eventually be used to strengthen the ecological resilience of Singapore.

They also focus on the following topics:

- Food Security - teaching students the importance of food resilience, and planting vegetables in the school garden
- Clean Energy - installed 1744 solar panels on all roof surfaces to reduce the school's carbon footprint
- Water Resources - their rainforest and wetland habitats helped to mitigate flash floods experienced in June 2020, and the school continues to brainstorm for ways to conserve water resources further
- Sustainable Lifestyle - actively practicing composting by collecting fallen leaves from their cleaners, and eliminating most single-use plastics in school
