The Don't Trash Your Cash! Comic Strip Challenge 2026 drew 110 entries from 31 primary and special education schools across Singapore. Students took on the challenge of crafting engaging comic strips to raise awareness of Singapore's Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS), illustrating how the scheme contributes to protecting our environment and building a more sustainable Singapore. 

First Prize

Name of Student: Kian Leonard Wang 

Name of School: Nan Chiau Primary School

Nature provides us with resources, and its survival depends on keeping the planet healthy. To protect our future, we should reduce our general waste and start recycling. When I saw the Return Right machine at the entrance of a supermarket near my home, I felt like there was a way to save our planet. I believe small habits create massive transformations, protecting the planet's survival and our own.

My comic depicts a conversation between two people, where one explains the purpose of the Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS) and guides the other through the four simple steps of using the machine. My thought process was to create a comic that felt uniquely Singaporean while keeping it clean, simple, and easy to understand. I wanted readers to learn about the scale of waste Singapore generates and to realise that participating in the BCRS is a straightforward way to help reduce waste. Through this comic, I hope to raise awareness about recycling and encourage people to do their part to create a cleaner and more sustainable Singapore.

My comic, "Trash Monster vs RRM Hero – Every Bottle Counts!", was inspired by Singapore's Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS). Instead of presenting facts, I wanted to explain BCRS through a fun story. The Trash Monster represents pollution and litter, while the RRM Hero helps people return bottles and cans for recycling. 

My message is simple: every bottle returned means less waste and a cleaner Singapore. Return Right Today, Save Tomorrow!

I created this comic to help young children understand the Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS) in a simple, engaging, and memorable way. Inspired by my real-life experience, the story follows a child buying a drink, identifying the 10-cent BCRS logo, and returning the empty container to a Return Right machine. To make the recycling process easy to follow for primary school students, I used bright colours, friendly characters, and step-by-step illustrations. Through this comic, I wanted to show that recycling is a simple everyday habit that anyone can pick up. With this story, I hope to encourage children and families to return eligible beverage containers, reduce waste, protect the environment, and understand that every small action contributes to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Singapore.

My comic strip follows a senior learning how to use the Return Right machine and receive the 10-cent deposit refund for eligible beverage containers. Through my comic, I hope to show that using the Return Right machine is easy and convenient, and to encourage people of all ages to recycle.
